Being an artist in postwar West Germany meant being part of a “lost generation”. This was on account of a major aesthetic disruption — first, from having been removed from the modernist continuum by Hitler and his cultural commissars, only to be plunged back into it after an extended absence. The past buried twice over. The result was a sense of alienation, of feeling...

I am accessing the internet from a different country than usual, and Wikipedia now has a new set of people asking me for donations: Ward Cunningham, inventor of the Wiki Older man with a cool mustache Karl Marx man and Fictional Raccoons woman and more. I’m often on Wikipedia but I’d never seen them until now. Are they region-specific? Or are they also to be found in Pallet Town?

Most of my best experiences in the past year have stemmed in some way from screwing things up on the first attempt. Unwittingly, I’ve learned a lot about car maintenance, and how to play in sessions with crazy banjo people - and of course some personal and/or work-related things which aren’t...

Achtung! In a break from our regular scheduled programming, Desert Palace brings you a longer, more thoughtful post from the depths of his cerebropolitical cortex. ♪ Gleich geht’s weiter! ♪ [A response to this post by the Soviette.] That’s it, really. hardcorefornerds: Some reflections on Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s National Address to the Irish people on the eve of his coalition’s first austerity budget. […] “Tonight, that may be the truth as you live it, and know it. Let me say this to you all: you are not responsible for the crisis.” This is interesting, as a way of reaffirming the place of the individual in the discourse. But if none of...

An Editorial Guide to the Eurocrisis
hardcorefornerds: So what’s this all about, then? There’s a good comparison to be made between the European debt crisis and the US one, i.e. over the deficit ceiling, where the problem is as much about a political standoff between a hardline ideology and pragmatic governance as it is about real economic problems. And even then, the solution to the economic weakness is to address the political...
