YOUR OLDEST FEARS ARE THE WORST ONES
Jenny Holzer / NYC, 1982

My first brush with Jenny Holzer was at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam a few years ago. I was coming up the escalator and there was a vertical scrolling LED display: pretty normal-looking, but as I read it I started to notice something amiss. I went and stood on the stairs and watched message after message, no two the same. I thought I was dreaming.
Of course, my bleary 6am eyes eventually spotted the tiny plaque on the ground floor, and I wandered down to check it for later googling. But the rest of my otherwise unexceptional day became glowingly surreal, thanks to this unexpected encounter.
