Give them a new PC with Linux already on it, one where they can pick up more or less where they left off — especially a machine that’s markedly cheaper than a Windows box — and they may find it that much easier to gravitate that way.

Linux is now a usable desktop OS for perhaps most Windows migrants. But after a quick Google, I’m thinking there’s a need for more comprehensive Windows-to-Linux migration resources. It’d be nice to have some sort of centralized documentation source, without having to scavenge through LDP and fora for relevant bits of information. Ubuntu does have a basic guide for Windows migration, but it really just covers the bare essentials.

Something like a Wiki could work, with an entry for each piece (or category) of Windows software, and possible options for Linux equivalents; articles by users describing their own setups… I’m just rambling now, but it could be an idea. Of course someone might already have had this idea, so I’ll keep a look out for it.
