Taoudenni is a remote salt-mining village.
Temperatures reach in excess of 60 degrees C from April to September. The only drinking water is a salinated pastoral well.
The salt is carried to Timbuktu via the semi-annual Azalai, one of the last extant caravan routes in the Sahara.
